Welcome

The SLO Bytes Linux Users Group is a non-profit organization of Linux users and computer enthusiasts based in San Luis Obispo, California. This LUG is a Special Interest Group (SIG) of the SLO Bytes PC Users Group.

We meet once a month at the KCBX Training Center to share our experiences about Linux, demonstrate applications and features of the Linux operating system. Other discussions include computer hardware as it applies to Linux and interfacing with the Windows or MAC operating system. The majority of our users have SimplyMepis and/or Ubuntu installed so we usually cater our presentations around these distributions. Our other favorites are: DSL, Knoppix and Mandriva.

Questions about our group may be directed to our coordinator, Alan J. Raul

Linux Distributions

  • Some Linux distributions boot into memory and are run from the CD, DVD and USB flash drive. These are called Linux LiveCD's, LiveDVD's, LiveDistro or LiveUSB. It's the easiest way for Microsoft® Windows users to experience Linux without installing anything! What is a LiveCD/DVD or a LiveDistro? Other Linux distributions you install onto a partitioned hard drive either with or without Windows. You can even install Ubuntu as a Windows application.
  • A very good article on Running Linux in Windows
  • All below Linux ISO files and more are available if you want to burn your own CD's or DVD. We will transfer the files to your USB external hard disk drive or laptop. You can also bring your own CD's or DVD's and we can burn them at the meeting for you.
