James Armstrong
The son of a Blues singing mother and jazz guitar playing father, James Armstrong got into music at an early age, forming his first band in seventh grade. Armstrong singles out Jimi Hendrix and Robert Cray as vocal influences, and Albert Collins and Eric Clapton as guitar influences.
Originally based in Los Angeles, Armstrong played the Blues Club scene there in the 1980s, backing performers like Big Joe Turner and Albert Collins. His first CD release, Sleeping with a Stranger, came in 1995. It was met with critical acclaim, and his career seemed to be taking off both here and in Europe. However, tragedy struck in 1997 when he was attacked and stabbed in his home. During his slow recuperation, he recorded Dark Night in late 1998. This introspective CD reflected his personal turmoil and his debut as a slide guitarist (necessitated by the injuries he suffered). Since this release, rehabilitation work has allowed him to regain his finger strength so that he is again playing lead guitar.
In the spring of this year, James Armstrong released his third CD, Got It Goin' On. Armstrong believes the recovery from his injuries helped him develop as a Blues musician, "I realized that I don't have to play fast to be effective. The blues is really about feeling anyway. It's what you put between the notes that sometimes makes the best statement of all.”
Blues Effects
The Blues Effects play blues and rhythm and blues. Four blues
veterans make up the band, which was formed in 1995. Jon Turner is
on lead guitar and vocals, Stan Sine is on harmonica and vocals, Mark Landstrom
is on bass, and Kevin McHatten is on drums. Their music includes
classic blues tunes from Junior Wells, Sonny Boy Williamson, and Little
Walter.
