Searching the US Census by Geographical Means by Joel Weintraub

* 11:00 AM - Board Meeting
* 12:30 - 1:00 PM - Research Class: “1940 Census” presented by Joel Weintraub

To entice even the most experienced researcher, Joel’s talk will use examples from the upcoming 1940 federal census, to be released in 2012.  Topics to be discussed, depending on available time, include Census Day (an April Fool's joke on those born on that date in 1940), types of schedules (demos of original forms), questions asked (including one 1940 new question of special interest to SLO historians), the use of “sampling” in 1940 ("the beginning of the end of the genealogical census"), undercounts (and the 1900 SLO census), privacy laws, age searches, name indexes and their problems, and truthful answers (and 1930 arrests).

* 1:00 PM - Business Meeting
* 1:15 - 1:45 PM Social time; book & drawing sales, snacks, coffee & tea

* 1:45 PM “Searching the US Census by Geographical Means When Name Indexes Fail" presented by Joel Weintraub

Joel's main talk will involve a look at geographical searches for census districts.  He will first discuss some of the inherent problems with names on the census schedules, using actual census forms as demonstrations.  The part of enumerators in this process will be discussed, as well as their logistical problems.  Next, a look at ranked versus exact searches for names on the census will concentrate on a case study using one of the "Stooges." Finally, a look at geographical aids at the National Archives (NARA) on their 1930 website and on the Morse 1-Step website will be done.  Examples will involve SLO census districts from 1900 through 1940.  To make the audience better census researchers, Joel will discuss the assumptions behind geographical searches.
